Abstract

This essay examines the depictions of colonial spaces and the failure of imperial endeavours in Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel Treasure Island. By combining several theoretical approaches, the aim is to foreground
the ways in which Stevenson subverts the norms of imperial romance and creates an adventure story that calls into question the very premise of its genre.
